  • ABE 040 - Reading Level IV/Pre-GED


    1.0 to 10.0 Credits
    Students continue to develop reading skills and strategies for effective comprehension of increasingly difficult materials. Preparation for GED, high school completion or developmental English classes.

    Course Objectives
    Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    1. Apply resources such as the library, Internet, and other on-line sources to research and read information. [EXPLORE]
    2. Read and interpret materials for multiple purposes such as gaining skills, information and enjoyment. [REASON]
    3. Demonstrate the ability to read text of limited personal interest to achieve long-term goals. [ACT]
    4. Apply reading strategies such as adjusting rate, determining purpose, previewing, and skimming of increasingly difficult materials and complex tasks. [EXPLORE]
    5. Apply context clues and word parts to determine meaning of complex vocabulary in a wide range of reading materials. [EXPLORE]
    6. Analyze format, organization, and structure of a text (non-fiction, essays, poetry, paragraphs, chapters) as an aid to reading comprehension. [REASON]
    7. Design an in-depth oral or written summary of non-fiction and fiction selections. [ACT]
    8. Identify the central theme, transition words, sentences, important details and paragraphs to aid in material comprehension. [EXPLORE]
    9. Identify inference and apply to reading comprehension. [REASON]
  • ABE 043 - Reading/Writing Level IV


    1.0 to 10.0 Credits
    Students continue to develop reading skills for effective comprehension of increasingly difficult materials while concurrently practicing writing. Preparation for GED, high school completion or developmental English classes.

    Course Objectives
    Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

    1. Develop and apply a more precise and sophisticated vocabulary. [COMMUNICATE]
    2. Demonstrate the ability to write, proof read, and edit a response to assigned readings. [COMMUNICATE]
    3. Participate in group reading assignments and discussions. [ACT]
    4. Make inferences based on evidence in the readings and on experience. [REASON]
    5. Comprehend, analyze, develop and write opinions regarding contemporary journalism. [REASON]
    6. Read, summarize and take notes on college level material for developing mastery over key concepts. [REASON]
    7. Develop and apply study skills necessary for comprehending and retaining college level material and concepts. [REASON]
  • ABE 095 - Keys to Academic Success


    Maximum of 3.0 possible Credits
    Basic skills students read with understanding, convey ideas in writing, and use math to solve problems and communicate as they develop skills for success and complete program assessment.

    1. Identify and assess current abilities, learning characteristics, styles, and readiness to learn. [EXPLORE]
