DIVST 100 - Introduction to Diversity Studies:CD
5.0 Credits Introduction to the issues, concepts, theories and research of diversity studies. Topics include race, class, gender, oppression/ suppression, ethnicity, and privilege. Prerequisite: Placement in ENGL 100 .
Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Define the characteristics and social patterns of diversity and pluralism. [REASON]
- Explain, analyze and apply major perspectives, theories, and concepts in diversity studies. [REASON]
- Define how identity is culturally constructed. [EXPLORE]
- Demonstrate an understanding of the historical concepts of race, gender,class, power, privilege, and oppression in the United States. [EXPLORE]
- Describe cultural identity and the way it shapes the perception of self and others. [ACT]
- Identify and assess empirical research findings to critically analyze issues related to diversity. [REASON]
