EMERG 100 - Introduction to Emergency Management
4.0 Credits
Provides an overview of historical and current emergency management preparedness and response practices, including the function and coordination of local, state and federal agencies, organizations and systems.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Explain the different phases of emergency management: prevention (mitigation); preparedness; response and recovery. [REASON]
- Identify hazards that are common to a local area and vulnerability to specific hazards. Communicate and interact respectfully through critical and imaginative expression. [REASON]
- Describe the roles of citizens, community, local, state, tribal, federal, private sector, voluntary, other groups and segments in the emergency management process. [COMMUNICATE]
- Explain the different types of plans and their strategy for emergency management functions. [COMMUNICATE]
- Explore critically and creatively the diversity of cultures, ethics, values, and ways of thinking across communities. [EXPLORE]
- Explain myths and realities of disaster response. [EXPLORE]
- Describe the different types of hazards found in the United States. [EXPLORE]
- Develop a personal emergency plan: consider plans for individuals, households, and work-groups based on the guide for citizen preparedness. [ACT]
- Describe the declaration process for CFR 44 Emergency Management and Assistance “The Stafford Act”. [COMMUNICATE]
- Initiate a hazard, vulnerability and risk analysis. [ACT]
