LEGAL 270 - Compensation Law
5.0 Credits
History of employee protection; administrative, legislative and judicial status of state and federal law regarding safety; industrial insurance. Longshoremen and Harborworkers’ Act, Worker’s Compensation Act; applicable pension statutes and other remedies. Prerequisite: LEGAL 200 or instructor’s permission.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the meaning and effect of the federal compensation law including the Federal Employees Compensation Act, the Longshoremen Act, and the Harbor Workers Act. [REASON]
- Define and apply the Washington state laws regarding industrial insurance and worker’s compensation, including the general reporting requirements, classifications, audit and record keeping, and rates and the rating system. [REASON]
- Research and apply the federal and State compensation laws using print and electronic sources. [REASON]
- Prepare oral and written responses to potential client inquiries regarding compensation law. [COMMUNICATE]
- Define and apply the federal and State agency rules and follow procedures for preparing and filing required forms, petitions, reports, notices, and other documents. [REASON]
- Draft worker’s compensation pleadings and prepare for mediations and hearings. [COMMUNICATE]
- Demonstrate awareness of the ethical and professional responsibilities of the lawyer and the paralegal in worker’s compensation law. [ACT]
