ACD 245 - Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Counseling
3.0 Credits
Covers principles and skills in counseling individuals and families recovering from chemical dependency or addiction. Includes development stages and tasks of recovery, use of 12 step and other support groups, establishing recovery and relapse management plans. Prerequisite: ACD 140 , SHS 114 , and SHS 216 or instructor permission.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate ability to recognize, describe and document behavioral problems related to addiction and identify common treatment issues. [REASON]
- Examine common elements of CD counseling treatment approaches and describe one’s own beliefs regarding theories of counseling; addiction treatment, and related counseling techniques. [REASON]
- Identify characteristics of an effective counselor and examine one’s own values and motives and how they impact clientele. [REASON]
- Identify major models of change in the recovery process (Erickson, DiClemente, Maslow). [REASON]
- Identify components of effective continuing care and relapse prevention. [REASON]
- Explore issues of professional burnout, self care, use of supervision, reporting requirements and licensure. [REASON]
- Review and describe several evidence based practices in addiction treatment and recovery. [REASON]
- Demonstrate ability to use professional methods such as ASAM criteria, articulate steps in ethical decisions and responsibilities to the agency and State. [REASON]
