SHS 117 - Crisis Intervention
3.0 Credits
Introduces theory and practice of crisis intervention. Includes the nature/natural history of crisis, types of crises, common reactions of people, outcome patterns, stages/goals of crisis intervention; methods to assist in resolving crisis constructively. S/U grade option.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to
- Identify stressors, challenges, and other factors that are likely to precipitate a crisis state. [REASON]
- Explain the stages, process, and goals of crisis intervention. [REASON]
- Demonstrate active listening skills that would be needed in a crisis situation. [COMMUNICATE]
- Describe and demonstrate the skills needed to collect and analyze relevant information about a person in crisis. [COMMUNICATE]
- Identify key risk factors associated with suicide and the warning signs of suicidal intent. [REASON]
- Describe the effects of crisis intervention on the human service worker. [REASON]
