BSTEC 206 - Introduction to Medical Records
5.0 Credits Uses, content, interpretation, evaluation, and basic processing procedures for health records; emphasis on data versus information, structure and application of health information, data storage, media, and other aspects of the health information management system. Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the functions of the HIM Department within the medical facility.
- Identify and describe the content, structure, use, storage, retrieval, and destruction of health information.
- Identify opportunities for health information employment.
- Identify and evaluate health record data sets, sources, and collection tools.
- Identify, define, and apply health data vocabulary.
- Evaluate the importance of data quality, integrity, monitoring, and compliance reporting.
- Identify and define terms and functions of chargemaster maintenance and MPI.
- Identify the National Healthcare Infrastructure.
- Identify regulatory guidelines, including confidentiality and ROI.
- Identify chart assembly and review roles and responsibilities for HIM staff.
