HORT 247 - Fruit and Nut Production I



2.0 Credits
Tree fruit production for the urban garden to small farm, focusing on cultivar selection, cultural requirements, propagation, planting, pruning, and management, with specific attention to heritage fruit tree restoration. Students practice techniques at the on-campus garden. Field trips are an integral part of this course. Be prepared to arrive and depart from sites on your own. Prerequisite

Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and select bioregionally appropriate tree fruit cultivars and rootstock and manage their site specific growth and cultural requirements.
  2. Discuss cultivar physiology and the limiting factors to growth, such as soil conditions, pollination, insects and pests, weeds, and diseases.
  3. Demonstrate tree fruit whip grafting propagation, bare root planting, and winter pruning and training techniques while managing limiting factors.
  4. Practice pruning heritage fruit trees and discuss the significance of fruit tree and orchard restoration within the context of sustainable food systems.
  5. Apply integrated pest management (IPM) and other biological control techniques to maintain cultivar health, vigor, and productivity.
