Gain knowledge and skills to support parents’ understanding of school structures, school operations, and parent rights and responsibilities. Emphasis given to promoting parents’ participation in their children’s education. Field study required. Permit code required. Prerequisite

Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe and analyze how school boards function and the role of school board members.
  2. Describe how public schools are financed.
  3. Demonstrate public speaking skills and abilities necessary for participation in school meetings as well as external resources for student support. 
  4. Identify and describe the leadership structure of local school districts.
  5. Explain strategies to assist parents in planning for parent/teacher conferences.
  6. Describe and analyze gateways and challenges for parent leaders as they help parents understand the educational system.
  7. Demonstrate problem solving skills to help parents advocate for their children effectively.
  8. Use strategies to help parents understand their rights and responsibilities as members of their school communities.
