LEGAL 205 - Civil Procedure
5.0 Credits
An overview of the civil litigation process and the paralegal’s role in handling civil cases. Topics include jurisdiction, venue, pleadings and motions, discovery, evidence, and alternatives to litigation. Emphasis is placed on using the Washington State Court Rules effectively. Students gain experience drafting basic pleadings and other papers. Prerequisite

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Differentiate between substantive and procedural law and explain the inter-relationship between the two.
- Understand the different stages of a civil case, from pre-litigation to appeal.
- Identify and apply the Washington State Court Rules correctly.
- Explain the concepts of personal jurisdiction, subject matter jurisdiction, and venue.
- Describe the various forms of civil discovery, including electronic discovery.
- Discuss how and why sanctions are obtained for failure to comply with discovery proceedings.
- Explain the importance of alternative dispute resolution to the civil litigation process.
- Define the area of remedies in civil litigation matters.
- Demonstrate the practical skills necessary for a paralegal to work successfully with attorneys and other paralegals on civil cases.
- Draft basic pleadings, motions, and other documents in proper court format.
