ENGL 170 - Popular Literature Past and Present:CD

Study of popular genres, such as science fiction, mystery, and Gothic, written by culturally diverse authors from the 19th century through the present.
Prerequisite Placement in ENGL 099 or instructor permission.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of literary concepts by identifying, describing, and comparing the formal elements, techniques, and genres of popular works and by analyzing how writers incorporate and depart from particular genres and styles.
- Reason clearly by applying critical-reading methods/theories to popular works in order to analyze their features and recurrent themes and to develop plausible, supportable interpretations.
- Describe and analyze the ways that popular works shape and are shaped by cultural/historical contexts, trends, attitudes and beliefs about such issues as race, class, gender, sexual orientation, cultural identity, religion, etc.
- Support analysis and interpretation of popular works by locating, using and citing relevant textual and contextual evidence.
