FSS 128 - Understanding School Systems
2.0 Credits
Gain knowledge of the public school system, including school structures, services, and operations, as well as parent rights and responsibilities. Emphasis given to developing skills to support the family’s understanding of school services and to promote family participation in their children’s education. S/U grade option.
Course-level Learning Objectives (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the history of the public school system and how public schools are financed.
- Identify and describe the leadership structure of local school districts as well as external resources for student support.
- Explain strategies to assist families in planning for parent/teacher conferences.
- Demonstrate problem solving skills to help parents advocate for their children effectively.
- Use strategies to help parents understand their rights and responsibilities as members of their school communities.
