CIS 253 - Application Development Tools


5.0 Credits
An introduction to application development using MS-Access. Includes development of tables, forms, queries, reports, macros, and menus needed to support the application. This course is a prerequisite for CIS 234. Prerequisite: CIS 250  and CS 115  (was CMPSC 115) or concurrent enrollment in both, with minimum grades of 3.0 or equivalent.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the fundamental principles of application design [COMMUNICATE]
  2. Use MS Access to build a student designed application. [REASON]
  3. Describe how Access integrates with enterprise systems. [COMMUNICATE]
  4. Given a database design and a few pre-built entities, build the following components of an Access application: Tables to store data; Forms and sub-forms for data entry into tables; Reports that display data in appropriate groups and formatting; Queries that assemble data from several tables for use with forms and reports; HTML Documents created from custom queries and exported to the Web; Modules and Event Procedures with VBA code to accomplish specific tasks; Menus for easy access to the various parts of the application.
