CIS 283 - Linux Server Security
5.0 Credits
Focuses on securing network services such as Apache, BIND, ProFTP, and securing mail, NTP and DHCP servers. Students will learn to protect networks/data with IPSec, OpenSSL, OpenSSH and GPG Encryption. Prerequisite: CIS 276 with a GPA of at least 2.5 or equivalent experience.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Harden the server by removing all non-essential packages and files. [REASON]
- Explain the use of pristine source instead of compiled binaries. [COMMUNICATE]
- Limit access and lock down services using Pluggable Authentication Modules. [REASON]
- Optimize and secure certain system binaries and libraries. [REASON]
- Configure and compile the kernel for security and performance. [REASON]
- Create stateful firewalls specific to each type of server using iptables. [REASON]
- Perform data encryption using GnuPG. [REASON]
- Encrypt web, mail, file, and ftp traffic using Secure Socket Layer encryption. [REASON]
- Monitor system integrity using Xinetd, Logwatch, Portsentry and Tripwire. [REASON]
- Configure and secure the BIND DNS server, mail servers, MySQL and PostgreSQL for use with Snort. [REASON]
- Manage Linux servers using LDAP directory services. [REASON]
- Install and configure the Squid proxy server to increase network speed and security. [REASON]
- Configure and harden Apache web servers, Samba file servers, and ftp servers using ProFDP and wuftp. [REASON]
