SHS 200 - Substance Abuse Prevention
3.0 Credits
Introduction to substance abuse prevention, addressing entry level concepts for this professional area. Includes prevention theory, methods, common prevention activities and successful strategies for working with community organizations and agencies. Prerequisite: ACD 140 .
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify risk, resiliency and protective factors and processes in individuals, families, and communities impacted by substance misuse. [REASON]
- Identify steps in the prevention planning process. [REASON]
- Describe various models of substance abuse prevention. [REASON]
- Identify and demonstrate application of criteria for evaluating success of prevention strategies and programs. [REASON]
- Describe access and critically differentiate ethical community prevention activities. [REASON]
- Demonstrate the application of theories and techniques of prevention planning and community readiness in various situations. [REASON]
- Describe and demonstrate a sensitivity to the cultural issues critical in the design and implementation of prevention activity. [EXPLORE]
