Direct Transfer Agreement

Program Description The Associate of Arts (AA) degree consists of 90 quarter credits earned in General Requirements, Distribution Requirements and Electives. The public community colleges and the four-year colleges and universities of the State of Washington have an established direct transfer agreement. That agreement allows students who hold the AA degree to transfer at least 90 quarter credits (60 semester credits) to four-year institutions for the purpose of satisfying most or all of the general education requirements of the receiving institution.

Credit/Grade Requirements Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in all college-level courses and earn at least 30 college-level (100 level or above) credits at Edmonds Community College.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Intermediate Algebra Proficiency This requirement may be satisfied by completion of high school mathematics through second year algebra or completion of MATH 090 - Intermediate Algebra  with a grade of 2.0 or higher. Note: High school transcripts are not used to determine placement into courses which have an intermediate algebra prerequisite.

Students Are Advised To

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall. Note applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

General Education Requirements Learning Outcomes


Students will demonstrate General Education Learning Outcomes in each of the following areas:

Communication Skills: Write in clear, effective ways, adapted to audience, context, and purpose.
Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning: Apply mathematical, quantitative, or symbolic models to solve problems, draw inferences, or support conclusions appropriate to an individual discipline.
Health and Physical Education: Demonstrate knowledge and skills in one of these areas: emergency care, contemporary health, principles of lifelong fitness, or athletic performance and teamwork.
Cultural Diversity: Apply multiple perspectives when examining cultural differences and interacting in multicultural settings.

II. Distribution Requirements (50 credits)


Note: A maximum of 10 credits in any one department may be included in the 50 distribution credits:

A. Humanities (minimum 15 credits)


Note: Select courses from at least three (3) departments within this distribution area. A maximum of five (5) credits in Performance/Skills courses may be applied. And a maximum of five (5) credits in foreign language at the 100 level may be applied.

B. Natural Sciences and Mathematics (minimum 15 credits)


Note: Select courses from at least two (2) departments/disciplines within this distribution area. At least ten (10) credits of Natural Science classes are required, five (5) of which must be a laboratory science. (Laboratory science courses are marked with an asterisk on the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Distribution Course List.) Computer Science, Mathematics, and Philosophy courses are not Natural Science courses.

C. Social Sciences (minimum 15 credits)

Distribution Requirements Learning Outcomes


Students will demonstrate Distribution Learning Outcomes in each of the following areas:

Humanities: Use Humanities-based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes.
Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights.
Social Sciences: Use Social Science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.

III. Specified Electives


Select additional courses from the following lists to bring total credits completed in sections I, II and III to a minimum of 75.

Select from any course numbered 100 or above in order to bring the total credits in General Education Requirements, Distribution Requirements, Specified Electives, and General Electives to 90.
