Occupational Safety and Health - Technician Associate of Applied Science-T Degree

Program Description The Occupational Safety and Health Technician Associate of Applied Science-T (AAS-T) was developed due to the high demand for trained professionals in this field. This two-year degree program provides education and training for individuals currently working in the safety field and for students desiring to work with national and state workplace safety and health standards.

This AAS-T is a credit professional-technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer. Degree is designed to articulate to Central Washington University, Evergreen State College,  and University of Phoenix. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution should contact an adviser from that school to create a four-year plan. Please note that articulations are subject to annual revision. Edmonds CC cannot be responsible for changes in graduation requirements at other institutions. Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider the Associate of Arts or the Associate of Science degree, which are specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Credit/Grade Requirements The AAS-T degree is awarded upon completion of A minimum of 99 credits of General Requirements, Distribution Requirements, and Specified Requirements outlined on the program requirement sheet. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Transfer of Credit Non-OSH credits will transfer from any accredited college to satisfy all non-OSH requirements. To transfer non-OSH credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the college registration office. This should be done during the student’s first quarter at the college.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Students are advised to

  • Consult with an OSH faculty adviser quarterly for course selection and completion of degree requirements and plan their schedule several quarters in advance (Note: all decisions on selection of courses are ultimately the responsibility of the student),
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • All students who intend to transfer should meet with an adviser of the college they plan to transfer to, and review specific admission requirements.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall. Note applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic adviser. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds Community College certificate or degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

I. General Education Requirements (10 credits)


A. Communication Skills (5 credits)


Students are advised to complete this course as soon as possible as it is a prerequisite for several other courses.

B. Quantitative Skills (5 credits)


Students are advised to complete the math requirement as soon as possible, in order to complete other General Education and OSH courses that have this as prerequisite. Placement in/or completion of MATH 90  is a prerequisite for MATH& 146.

MATH& 107  is recommended as an additional elective for students planning to transfer to a four-year school.

II. Distribution Requirements (20 credits)


Placement into MATH 90  is a prerequisite for CHEM& 121.

Social Sciences: Use Social Science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.

Program Requirements Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the Program Learning Requirements for this degree, students will be able to:
  • Ability to communicate effectively and creatively through writing, presentation, training and through daily interaction with others.
  • Ability to think critically about historical and current political and social trends surrounding the profession of occupational safety and health.
  • Advise upper management in how to maximize worker productivity through raising morale and reducing absenteeism, turnover, and equipment downtime while saving on insurance premiums, workers’ compensation benefits, and litigation expenses and presenting safety and health prevention measures in a cost effective manner.
  • Awareness of diversity issues that affect historical and current trends as well as their affect on the communication and training process of diverse populations.
  • Collect data on work environments for on-going analysis that may predict risks and hazards.
  • Conduct job site inspections and determine which areas may not be in compliance with State and Federal laws and/or company policies.
  • Identify sources of exposure and/or contamination and design programs to control, eliminate, and mitigate disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, radiological, and biological agents or ergonomic factors.
  • Maintain complete safety and health records as required by law and by company policy and preparing reports that may be used in legal proceeding and financial planning.
  • Promote a culture of health and safety within organizations by communicating to workers and management about risks and hazards, training workers how to avoid accidents and how to protect themselves and others.
  • Reduce harm to workers, property, the environment, and the general public by identifying hazardous conditions/practices and implementing corrective measures.
  • Respond to an incident by utilizing emergency response plans, investigating the event, assisting the worker(s) with immediate and long term rehabilitation with a focus on returning to work and by promoting corrective action to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
  • Comprehension of and commitment to best practices in sustainability and global consciousness.
  • Ability to utilize basic quantitative skills necessary to support the above skill sets.
