Horticulture - Ornamental Horticulture - Restoration Horticulture Associate of Technical Arts Degree

Program Requirements Professionals in this field use their training to apply innovative revegetation techniques to help restore disturbed and degraded land. They are also trained to use landscaping techniques such as green roof, bioswale, and urban forestry solutions to mitigate the effects of urbanization. Credit/Grade Requirements This ATA degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 95 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Previously Earned Credit To transfer horticulture or other college credits, student must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the Enrollment Services office. This should be done during your first quarter at Edmonds CC. Students wishing to seek a waiver of credit requirements should obtain a Petition for Waiver form from the Enrollment Services office. Other curriculum modifications based on work or other special experiences should be discussed with your horticulture adviser.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses. Students are advised to

  • Contact Enrollment Services to make an advising appointment and take the ACCUPLACER tests. Placement into BRDGE 093  or higher, as well as MATH 080  or higher is strongly recommended and may be required for some courses;
  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year, or those that may alternate between day and evening offerings from year to year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and
  • Meet quarterly with an adviser from the horticulture faculty to assure graduation as planned.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Program Requirements Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the Program Requirements for this degree, students will be able to:
  • Identify and list the cultural requirements of common native and landscape trees, shrubs, forbs, and grasses used and found in the Puget Sound bioregion.
  • Combine basic theories and concepts of plant science with horticultural technologies to successfully grow plants, manage landscapes, mitigate urbanization, and restore natural areas.
  • Successfully identify and practice the safe, efficient, and sustainable use of horticultural tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Identify key plant problems and prescribe sustainable management options.
  • Identify and describe from a landscape ecology and sustainable horticulture perspective the principal land and water management issues affecting the Puget Sound bioregion.
  • Define, describe, and apply current technologies and design solutions used in horticultural, landscape, and ecological restoration.
  • Describe the principal codes, statutes, and rules affecting restoration horticulture technologies and projects as well as the regulatory agencies responsible for them.
  • Career Management: Demonstrate the ability to research employment opportunities, prepare an effective employment package, and present oneself positively in a job interview.
