Family Support Studies - Certificate

Program Description Family Support Studies (FSS) is a unique program which has received national recognition. Coursework provides education and training to students currently working or desiring to work with individuals and their families using family support practice and principles. The approach nurtures healthy development of families by looking at strengths, connecting families to community resources, and supporting and empowering parents to become advocates for their families. Effective family support encourages practitioners from different fields to work together to support family growth and development. The program is designed to bring individuals from diverse disciplines together in a common study of family support principles and practices. Students have found employment in various fields of interest including: health, education, and human services. This Certificate of Completion requires successful completion of a minimum of 50 credits as outlined.

Advising Note This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic advisor. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds CC certificate or degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

General Education Requirements (21 credits)


Communication Skills (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Communicate and interact effectively through a variety of methods appropriate to audience, context, purpose, and field/discipline.

Human Relations and Professional Development Skills (11 credits)


OUTCOME: Act responsibly in applying professional and academic standards associated with personal wellness; sustainable management of resources; and/or with success in educational, workplace, community, and team settings.

Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze and solve problems.

Cultural Diversity Skills


OUTCOME: Explore and apply multiple perspectives in order to examine cultural differences and influences; maintain effective professional/working relationships; and/or interact effectively in multicultural settings.

OUTCOMES:

  1. Apply the principles of family support and demonstrate best practices in any human services, education or prevention program settings.
  2. Demonstrate ability to effectively work with individuals using communication skills, group interaction, problem solving, and ethical procedures.
  3. Identify local, regional, and state services that are available to families and individuals.
  4. Apply knowledge of community collaborations and identify barriers to services.
  5. Demonstrate leadership skills and techniques, including empowering others to become natural leaders in the community.
  6. Demonstrate a knowledge of family systems and governmental, social, and political systems that affect families.

Program Notes


The program code for this certificate is 434D. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.
  • The program is designed to appeal to both professionals and nonprofessionals wishing to enter the field. For the professional, coursework provides supplemental education for employees intending to infuse concepts of family support in their work environments: including health, education and human services. For those wishing to enter the field, the program provides both theory and practice and opportunity to exchange ideas with those currently working in the field.
  • Students who have completed core coursework for a human services or early childhood education degree may only need to complete the 20 FSS credits specific to the Family Support Certificate.
  • Completion of the core requirements, ENGL& 101 and ENGL 102, will apply toward the AA degree option: Family Support Studies - Transfer to Washington State University and the AAS-T degree option. Students should meet with an adviser regarding these options.
  • Transfer of Credit Non-family support studies credits may transfer from any accredited college to satisfy all non-family support studies requirements. To transfer non-family support studies credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the college registration office. This should be done during the student’s first quarter at the college.

*Program Requirements notes:

  • This group of five courses (SHS 104*, FSS 195*, FSS 215*, SHS 117*, and SHS 200*) also meets the requirements for the Prevention Specialist Certificate of Completion, which covers the educational component of the state of Washington’s Associate Prevention Professional (APP) credential.
  •  Courses marked with + may be met using courses from the Parent Mentor I-BEST program.

**Program Electives note: Courses taken as part of the Parent Mentor I-BEST program may be applies as program electives (including the Electives list for this program plus FSS 127 Community Interpreting & Translating).

Certificate General Information


Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds CC’s four General Education Outcomes­ (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.

Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets  page.

Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice per year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
  • Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor; and
  • At least three quarters before you plan to graduate, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds CC. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds CC.  

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses.
