Occupational Safety and Health - Construction Safety Technician Certificate

Program Description The Occupational Safety and Health Construction Safety Certificate was developed due to the high demand for trained professionals in this field. This certificate program provides education and training for individuals currently working in the construction field and for students desiring to work with national and state workplace safety and health standards in the construction industry.

Credit/Grade Requirements This certificate is awarded upon completion of a minimum of 54 - 55 credits in general education and program requirements as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Transfer of Credit Non-OSH credits may transfer from any accredited college to satisfy all non-OSH requirements. To transfer non-OSH credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the Enrollment Services office. This should be done during the student’s first quarter at the college.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses. Students are advised to

  • Consult with an OSH faculty adviser quarterly for course selection and completion of degree requirements and plan their schedule several quarters in advance (note: all decisions on selection of courses are ultimately the responsibility of the student),
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • All students who intend to transfer should meet with an adviser of the college they plan to transfer to, and review specific admission requirements.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Note: MATH 90 or equivalent is a prerequisite for MATH& 146.

Program Requirements (32 credits)


OUTCOMES:

  • Apply federal and state OSH standards to identify potential hazards to workers, property, the environment, and the public and then design protocols and/or practices to minimize the hazards and avoid accidents.
  • Develop controls with the intent of preventing diseases and/or injury caused by chemical, radiological, biological, and the physical aspects of the occupational environment, while also considering ergonomic factors.
  • Communicate with workers and management through writing, presentations, and training about all the aspects surrounding workplace and/or occupational risk and hazards. Train organizational personnel on compliance requirements with federal and state safety guidelines. The objective of this communication should strive to go beyond basic communications and regulatory requirements, so that it promotes a safety culture within all the members of an organization.
  • Conduct job site inspections and determine areas that may not be in compliance with state and federal laws and/or company policies.
  • Develop methods to investigate and document occupational incidents and accidents. Formulate methods to review investigations and present and select preventative measures to prevent recurrence. Ensure record keeping meets regulatory requirements.
  • Develop a construction specific safety plan that will be in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Utilize basic quantitative skills to design and implement legally required safety and health records and maintain safety metrics.

OUTCOME: Demonstrate the ability to research employment opportunities, prepare an effective employment package, and present oneself positively in a job interview.
