Emergency Management and Business Continuity Associate in Applied Science-T Degree

Program Description The Emergency Management and Business Continuity Associate in Applied Science-T Degree program was developed due to the high demand for trained professionals in this multi-disciplined field. This two-year degree program provides education and training for individuals currently working in the field and for students desiring to work in business operations, security, crisis management, emergency planning, preparedness, business continuity, disaster response, and recovery for private sector, community, nonprofit, voluntary, tribal, or governmental agencies.

This associate in applied science-T (AAS-T) degree is a professional-technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer. In general, professional-technical degrees are not designed for transfer to other colleges or universities. This degree will articulate to several four-year institutions, including AMU/APUS, CWU/ITAM program, TESC, Antioch and University of Phoenix, as well as other institutions.

Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider an associate of arts or associate of science degree, which are specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Credit/Grade Requirements The AAS-T degree is awarded upon completion of a minimum of 95-99 credits of general education, distribution, and program requirements as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning a degree or certificate of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by taking at least five (5) credits of CD courses. Students are advised to

  • Consult with an EMERG faculty adviser quarterly for course selection and completion of degree requirements and plan their schedule several quarters in advance (Note: All decisions on selection of courses are ultimately the responsibility of the student),
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Meet with an adviser of the college they plan to transfer to review exact and specific admission requirements.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.

Communication Skills (10 credits)


OUTCOME: Write in clear, effective ways, adapted to audience, context, and purpose. 

Quantitative Skills (5 credits)


OUTCOME: Apply mathematical, quantitative, or symbolic models to solve problems, draw inferences, or support conclusions appropriate to an individual discipline.

Note: Students must complete a quantitative reasoning course, which requires completion of MATH 090  or an equivalent placement score. Students should meet with an adviser to discuss math requirements for transferring to a four-year school.

OUTCOME: Apply multiple perspectives when examining cultural differences and interacting in multicultural settings.

Distribution Requirements (20 credits)


OUTCOMES:

  • Use Humanities-based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes.
  • Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights.
  • Use Social-Science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.

Program Requirements (40-44 credits)


 OUTCOMES:

  • Describe strategies to consider for an emergency, continuity or disaster recovery management program, incorporating analysis techniques and concepts of operations.
  • Describe, explain, and analyze the different phases in Emergency Management: Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery.
  • Describe how to integrate, coordinate, and collaborate with communities, agencies, and emergency management teams in order to facilitate crisis prevention, emergency management, continuity of operations, and problem solving.
  • Identify and describe the psychological and social impact of natural and man-made disasters.
  • Describe and explain the critical guidelines, regulations, and systems utilized in the different phases of emergency management.
  • Explain the use of professional tools and guidelines to conduct rapid-needs assessment of trained and voluntary responders to develop competency based criteria for training and exercise objectives.

Program Electives (minimum 20 credits)


Courses in other areas can be applied to these additional requirements from general education, Business, Computer Information Systems, and Humanities that will transfer to the four year institution of choice. See a faculty adviser.
