Horticulture - Urban Agriculture: Enterprises Certificate

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Degrees and Certificates by Type

Program Description This certificate provides a theoretical foundation in urban agriculture through the study of environmental sustainability principles, ecology in agricultural systems, and plant and soil sciences. There is also a practical focus on the study and hands-on design, planning, and operation of agriculture systems relevant to urban environments—including backyard, vertical, rooftop, and community gardens, micro-farms, and food hubs and markets. Students explore career options and apply knowledge, skills, and techniques through internship, practicum, or research experience. This certificate may be combined with the Urban Agriculture Production Certificate to complete the larger Urban Agriculture Systems Certificate. This certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 29 credits as outlined.

Advising Note This program requirement sheet is not a substitute for meeting with an academic advisor. Meeting the requirements to graduate with an Edmonds CC certificate or degree is ultimately the responsibility of the student.

Program Requirements (minimum 29-35 credits)

  1. Describe the ecological principles that support agroecosystems at different geographic and economic scales, including the significance of plant diversity and soil properties and processes to terrestrial ecosystems and human societies.
  2. Apply whole systems and permaculture design tools to urban and small farm agriculture systems to then implement whole-farm enterprise management and business plans from greenhouse seeds to local direct market sales.
  3. Demonstrate a synthesis of existing and new knowledge and skills and the ability to work as part of a team and independently within a sustainable agriculture internship, practicum, or research work environment.
