Program Description The Parent and Family Support Certificate offers students certification upon completion of the core courses in the Parent Mentor and Family Support Programs. The focus of this Certificate is to provide beginning skills needed to provide support and mentoring to parents and families in school or human service settings. This Certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 29 credits as outlined.

Program Requirements (minimum 22 credits)
- Apply the principles of family support and demonstrate best practices in human services, education, or prevention program settings.
- Demonstrate ability to effectively work with individuals using communication and conflict resolution skills, group interaction, problem solving, and ethical procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of community resources that are respectful, responsive, and culturally appropriate to meet the needs of today’s diverse families.
- Demonstrate leadership skills to support families in public schools, Head Start/ECEAP, or other community programs, including empowering others to become natural leaders.

The program code for this certificate is 434E. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.
- Family Support Studies is a unique program at the college which has received national recognition. Coursework provides education and training to students currently working with individuals and their families using family support practice and principles. The approach nurtures healthy development of families by looking at strengths, connecting families to community resources, and supporting and empowering parents to become advocates for their families.
- This program is designed to appeal to bicultural and/or bilingual parent volunteers serving in school districts as natural leaders using an optional I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) model, which includes basic skills classes to enhance English reading and writing abilities. Students using this option who are ABE/ESL students must also complete a required 8 credits of basic skills classes in addition to the requirements above. Permit codes are necessary to enter these classes, and can be obtained in consultation with a faculty advisor.
- Not all courses are offered every quarter. Some elective courses are offered only once a year. Students are strongly urged to consult with their faculty advisor regarding their career objectives, interests, and schedule planning.
- The certification is an abbreviated certificate awarded upon completion of the core courses in the Parent Mentor and Family Support Programs. The courses can be applied to Family Support Studies or Social and Human Services ATA or AAS-T degrees. See a faculty advisor for program details.

- Courses may be taken in any sequence. CD indicates cultural diversity designation.
- Courses marked with an asterisk (*) taken with SHS 104 and SHS 117 also meets the requirements for the Prevention Specialist Certificate of Completion, which covers the educational component of the state of Washington’s Associate Prevention Professional (APP) credential.
Certificate General Information
Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.
Program of Study Outcomes Student achievement is assessed in the general and program specific outcomes via the courses and course objectives that align with those outcomes. More information about program outcomes and course objectives can be found on the Using Program Requirement Sheets page.
Students Are Advised To:
- Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
- Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and
- Communicate with an academic advisor and/or a faculty advisor.
Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
