Computer Information Systems - Cyber Security Specialist Certificate


Program Description The purpose of the Cyber Security Specialist Certificate is to give students the skill sets and knowledge required to protect an organization’s information technology infrastructure and information assets from unauthorized acess, disclosure, or destruction. Topics of the program include: information systems security, cyber security fundamentals, incident response, computer forensics, host system security, designing secure networks, technical and organizational information security risks, and implementing administrative and technical controls. Some of the courses will also assist students in achieving various network security industry certifications. This certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 40 credits as outlined.

Program Requirements (40 credits)


OUTCOMES:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of administrative and technical strategies for mitigating and managing threats posed to information systems.
  2. Select, configure, and employ the appropriate technical solutions and components to protect a network infrastructure and the related information assets.
  3. Plan and execute an information security risk analysis and vulnerability assessment.
  4. Conduct forensic analysis on various types of computing devices and storage media.

Program Notes


The program code for this certificate is 506C. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.

  • Entry requirements This certificate program begins at a high level, with PC Fundamentals and Networking Fundamentals as prerequisites for the certificate. Students may need to complete CIS 116  IT Prior Learning Assessment to waive prerequisites and gain proper placement into the program. Students with work experience and/or other CIS and CEN degree or certificates may be eligible to begin the program directly. Please see an appropriate CIS faculty advisor to assess your individual situation.
  • Students planning to continue on to a two-year ATA degree in CIS should plan ahead while working toward their CIS certificate. For a smooth transition from certificate to degree, students should see a CIS advisor at their earliest opportunity.

Certificate General Information


Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Students Are Advised To:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
