Program Description The BAS degree is an applied bachelor’s degree specifically designed to build on professional-technical associate’s degrees that provide workplace skills, such as the Associate in Applied Science-Transfer (AAS-T) degree. The BAS degree differs from other bachelor degrees as it incorporates prior work experience and more hands-on learning. Graduates with a BAS degree may apply to related master's degree programs.
With a foundation in social justice, equity, and inclusion, the BAS in Child, Youth, and Family Studies (BAS-CYFS) degree provides advanced knowledge and skills for professional positions in early learning settings and social services programs for young children, youth, and families of diverse populations.
This interdisciplinary degree integrates Early Childhood Education, Human Services, Addiction Studies, and Family Support Studies as it emphasizes the whole family system and a holistic approach when working with children, youth, and families.
Acceptance into the Bachelor of Applied Science program is by application only and requires fulfilling admittance requirements with completion of an AAS-T degree in Early Childhood Education, Social and Human Services, Addiction Studies, or Family Support Studies, or equivalent. Students with an Associate of Technical of Arts (ATA) degree in one of these areas are encouraged to consult with an advisor regarding additional prerequisite course requirements to be completed before beginning the program.
This BAS degree is awarded upon completion of a minimum of 180 credits as outlined.

Proficiency Requirement (minimum 60 credits)
This degree requires the completion of an Associate of Applied Science-Transfer (AAS-T) degree, including a minimum of 60 credits of professional-technical courses from a regionally-accredited school to demonstrate proficiency in one of the following career areas:

General Education Requirements (60 credits)
Communication Skills (10 credits)
OUTCOME: Communicate and interact effectively through a variety of methods appropriate to audience, context, purpose, and field/discipline.
Quantitative Analysis/Symbolic Reasoning Skills (5 credits)
OUTCOME: Reason clearly using academic or professional modes of inquiry; using quantitative or symbolic reasoning; and/or using other discipline/field specific methods to explore and create ideas; identify information needs; process, evaluate, and use information; and recognize, analyze, and solve problems.
Humanities Distribution (10 credits)
OUTCOME: Use humanities-based methods to reason, communicate, make meaning, solve problems, and/or create or perform cultural works for diverse audiences and purposes.
Natural Sciences and Mathematics Distribution (10 credits)
OUTCOME: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights.
Social Sciences Distribution (10 credits)
OUTCOME: Use social science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.
Additional General Education Requirements (15 credits)
Choose three additional courses from the Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, or Social Sciences courses listed in the above categories or from the following options:
Upper Division Program Requirements (60 credits)
- Utilize knowledge base to support a systemic and developmental approach to improve the lives of children, youth, and families across the lifespan.
- Demonstrate ability to synthesize multiple perspectives in the context of teaching, youth services, and family support.
- Apply principles of equity and inclusion through strengths-based strategies to build resiliency and opportunity for individuals and families to reach their goals.
- Articulate and demonstrate a professional identity utilizing evidence-based practices, standards, and ethical conduct in early childhood and social service careers.
The program code for this degree is 42B. For financial aid, advising, and other reasons, students should work with their advisor to ensure that this code is properly recorded on their academic record.
This program is designed for students who have completed an AAS-T degree in Early Childhood Education, Social and Human Services, Family Support Studies, or Addiction Studies, or who have completed an ATA in one of these areas and taken additional prerequisite general education courses. The Bachelor of Applied Science in Child, Youth, and Family Studies program is by application only; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
Completion of an AAS-T, or equivalent degree, in ECE, SHS, FSS, or Addiction Studies.
Minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA and minimum grade point of 2.0 in core courses of the AAS-T, or equivalent degree, in specified fields.
Admissions into Edmonds Community College.
Two to three page personal statement, following specified prompts outlined in application packet.
Resume describing work experience, but not limited to including, but not limited to, internships, work study, and volunteering activities, and length of time at each.
Two professional recommendation forms, provided in application packet.
Unofficial transcripts from any colleges attended with credits student would like to transfer. Official transcripts will be requested upon acceptance into the program.
Non-refundable $25.00 BAS application fee.
Alternate general education courses previously completed from an accredited college may be accepted to meet the General Education requirements through the transcript evaluation process. Please contact the Program Manager for more details.
Additional general elective courses can be used with department approval.
MATH&146, or equivalent course, with minimum grade of 2.0 or higher, is the prerequisite for Applied Research Methods and Informational Literacy (CYFS 420).

Bachelor of Applied Science General Information
BAS Degree General Description The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree is a 180 credit baccalaureate degree, specifically designed to build on professional-technical associate degrees that provide workplace skills, such as Associate of Applied Science-Transfer (AAS-T) degrees. BAS degrees include a professional core of courses from the AAS-T degree, general education credits and upper division courses. BAS degrees are a pathway to the baccalaureate level with upper-division coursework in an applied field that provide expanded career opportunities for graduates and meet the needs of employers in the community. BAS degrees incorporate more applied, hands-on learning than a traditional bachelor’s degree and allow a student to advance their skills and abilities without requiring the student to follow the traditional direct transfer degree pathway. Program of Study Outcomes Edmonds CC’s four General Education Outcomes (Communicate, Act Responsibly, Reason, and Explore) are promoted throughout the college’s programs. Instructional programs of 45 credits or more foster learning in all four General Education Outcomes.

Credit/Grade Requirements A minimum of 60 credits or one-third of the required college-level (100-level or above) credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds CC. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.
Students Are Advised To:
- Consult quarterly with a faculty and/or academic advisor;
- Plan your schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
- Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning; and
- Before beginning the program, contact any college(s) where you have earned credits and have your official transcript(s) sent to Edmonds CC. Then, submit an Evaluation Request - Transfer Credits Form (available in Enrollment Services) to activate the process of transferring credits to Edmonds CC.
Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted online by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Note: Applications for summer quarter are due by the 8th day of the quarter.
