Family Support Studies Associate of Arts Degree - Transfer to Washington State University

Family Support Studies is a unique program which has received national recognition. Course work provides education and training to students currently working or desiring to work with individuals and their families using Family Support practice and principles. This 98 credit Associate of Arts degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to the Washington State University’s Human Development program. With this AA degree and all admission requirements, students will qualify for junior standing on acceptance into the program. WSU offers a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development on the Pullman and Vancouver campuses and through WSU Online. With this articulation, it is possible for students to earn a four-year degree in Human Development that recognizes the Family Support Studies courses as a minor concentration through access to Edmonds Community College and Distance Degree Programs.

Admission Requirement to Washington State University’s Human Development Program All students who intend to transfer to WSU should talk with a University adviser to review specific admission requirements. Students must have a 2.5 minimum cumulative grade point average to be considered for admission to WSU. See WSU transfer courses equivalency guidelines.

All students who intend to transfer should meet with an adviser of the college they plan to transfer to review exact and specific admission requirements.

Edmonds Community College Requirements This AA Degree requires successful completion of 98 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Intermediate Algebra Proficiency This requirement may be satisfied by completion of high school mathematics through second year algebra, completion of MATH 090 , the sequence MATH 091  and MATH 092  or MATH 095 

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year;
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning;
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser If transferring to a four-year institution, the student should consult with the appropriate department at the intended transferring school for entrance requirements; and
  • Send for transcripts from other colleges where the student has earned credits and request a transcript evaluation. Transcripts are to be mailed to the Enrollment Services Office at Edmonds Community College. Transcript evaluation forms are available through Enrollment Services.

 You may choose any combination of PE courses numbered 100 or above, HLTH 100 , or HLTH 105 .

II. Distribution Requirements (50 credits):


A maximum of 10 credits in any one department/discipline may be included in the 50 distribution credits.

C. Social Science (minimum 15 credits)


 WSU recommends PSYC& 100 and SOC& 101.

D. Specified Electives


Select from either the Distribution Requirements List or the Specified Electives list so that the sum of credits in General Requirements, Distribution Requirements, and Specified Electives is at least 75 credits.

E. General Electives


Select from courses numbered 100 or above in order to bring the total credits in General Requirements, Distribution Requirements, and Electives to 90.
