Early Childhood Education - Associate of Technical Arts Degree or Certificate

This program prepares a student for employment in early childhood (infancy to third grade) program settings for work as a teacher, elementary school classroom aide, assistant teacher, preschool teacher, family support worker, or program administrator.

Credit/Grade Requirements This Early Childhood Education ATA degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 90 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser.

Degree Outcomes

The overall outcome of the Edmonds Community College Early Childhood Education (ECE) program is intended to prepare early childhood professionals who are able to teach young children and work with their parents through interaction in a reflective and problem-solving manner.

Students will document understanding and performance of the below stated learning outcomes on individualized levels in a continuum of professional learning. This is demonstrated through the knowledge and skills provided in the ECE Certificate and the higher levels of mastery obtained in the ECE ATA Degree and the ECE AAS-T Degree. The certificate and degrees prepare students for different employment opportunities.

Students  pursuing a certificate or degree in Early Childhood Education are  expected to demonstrate their abilities in the following areas*:

  • Document a foundational knowledge of how the role as a child development specialist will influence and be applied as a teacher of young children, citing specific teaching approaches, strategies, rationale for decision making, and tools for early education.
  • Document the ability to articulate a personal definition of the role of the early childhood teacher and a professional philosophy with defined strategies and identified bodies of knowledge that optimally support and encourage children’s growth and development.
  • Document evidence of professionally defined dispositions that will support reflective thought and the use of reflective thought to guide selection of teaching strategies, methods of interactions, and curriculum decisions.
  • Document and demonstrate understanding of professionally defined characteristics, standards, practices, and teaching strategies of effective early childhood teachers.
  • Document the skills and knowledge to plan a curriculum and classroom program that is based upon observational data, professionally defined standards, current research findings, and theories of learning during the early childhood stage of development.
