Energy Management - Associate of Technical Arts Degree

Individuals pursuing a degree in energy management will be able to apply basic energy management and technical skills in support of businesses as well as electric, gas, and water utility companies and community action agencies engaged in developing energy-efficiency applications for homes and businesses. The program includes instruction in principles of energy and energy management, the technologies and techniques allowing for energy efficiency and conservation, energy end-use analysis, monitoring systems, energy-use accounting, project management, and report preparation and presentation skills.

Credit/Grade Requirements This ATA degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 95 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser.

Students completing this degree will be able to:

  • Use technology, technical skills, and situational analysis to manage energy use information, analyze data and propose greater efficiency in the use of energy.
  • Create an environment conducive to positive group interaction; establish and maintain effective working relationships in multicultural settings.
  • Apply project management concepts and practices to oversee an energy management project or program’s time, cost and quality.
  • Apply knowledge of energy efficiency, conservation, and sustainable practices to energy management projects.
  • Evaluate the energy use patterns for buildings and recommend energy efficiency measures, equipment, processes and practices, and cost-efficient alternative energy solutions.
  • Understand the interaction between energy-consuming building systems and consumer needs to make recommendations for the more efficient use of energy.
  • Develop energy evaluation technical reports and make presentations for potential project or program implementation.
  • Use appropriate information resources to research professional issues.
  • Collect, display, discuss and analyze data to make recommendations on individual projects, programs and program design, and policies.
