Family Support Studies - Certificate

Family Support Studies is a unique program which has received national recognition. Coursework provides education and training to students currently working or desiring to work with individuals and their families using Family Support practice and principles. The approach nurtures healthy development of families by looking at strengths, connecting families to community resources, and supporting and empowering parents to become advocates for their families. Effective family support encourages practitioners from different fields to work together to support family growth and development. The program is designed to bring individuals from diverse disciplines together in a common study of family support principles and practices. Students have found employment in various fields of interest including: health, education, and human service agencies.

The program is designed to appeal to both the professional and non-professional wishing to enter the field. For the professional, course work provides supplemental education for employees intending to infuse concepts of family support in their work environments: including health, education and human service agencies. For those wishing to enter the field, the program provides both theory and practice and opportunity to exchange ideas with those currently working in the field.

Credit/Grade Requirements This Certificate requires successful completion of a minimum of 44 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses. Students who have completed core course work for a human services or early childhood degree may only need to complete the 20 FSS credits specific to the Family Support Certificate requirements.

Completion of the core requirements, ENGL& 101  and a speech class, will apply toward the Family Support Studies AA Option 1 transfer to WSU  and the AAS-T . Students should meet with an adviser regarding this option.

Transfer of Credit Non-family support credits may transfer from any accredited college to satisfy all non-family support requirements. To transfer non-family support credits, students must request an evaluation of their college transcripts through the college registration office. This should be done during the student’s first quarter at the college.

Graduation Application A completed Graduation Application form must be submitted to Enrollment Services by the 10th day of the quarter in which the student expects to graduate. Forms are available online or at Enrollment Services located in Lynnwood Hall.

Students are advised to:

  • Plan their schedule several quarters in advance in order to accommodate courses that are offered only once or twice a year,
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • Communicate with a faculty adviser.

Certificate Outcomes


Students completing this certificate will be able to:

  • Apply the nine principles of Family Support and demonstrate best practices in any human service, education or prevention program setting.
  • Identify quality practices that are respectful, responsive and culturally appropriate to meet the needs of today’s families.
  • Identify local, regional and state services are available to families and how to access these services.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills and techniques to empower parents to become leaders in their communities.
  • Apply their knowledge of community collaborations and identify barriers to services.
  • Analyze effective strategies to identify and build upon the strengths of each family and empower them to advocate for the healthy growth of their children and their adult and aging family members.
