Program Description This program of study provides the foundation, knowledge and skills to effectively work with individuals and families experiencing difficulties resulting from drug use, misuse or dependency. Successful completion of this degree will enable the graduate to satisfy the State of Washington educational requirements for Chemical Dependency Professionals.

This Associate in Applied Science-T (AAS-T) in Alcohol and Chemical Dependency Counseling is a professional technical degree with a core of general education courses commonly accepted in transfer. In general, professional technical degrees are not designed for transfer to other colleges or universities. This degree will articulate to the Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Behavioral Sciences at Seattle Central Community College.

Students seeking to transfer to degree programs other than those specifically designed for the AAS-T should consider the Associate of Arts degree  or the Associate of Science degree, which are specifically designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

Note: A Washington state background check is required for entrance into this vocation and some limitations are in effect for those with former felony convictions. If you have questions about this, please contact the department adviser or the Department of Health directly.

Credit/Grade Requirements This AAS-T degree requires successful completion of a minimum of 112 credits as outlined. A minimum of 30 credits or one-third of the required credits, whichever is less, must be earned at Edmonds Community College. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in all college-level courses.

Cultural Diversity Requirement All students earning degrees and certificates of 45 credits or more must meet a cultural diversity (CD) requirement by completing courses marked as “CD” on the requirement sheet and/or “Meets Cultural Diversity Requirement” in the quarterly class schedule. Those courses may also be used to fulfill other requirements of the degree or certificate.

Students are advised to

  • Consult with an SHS faculty adviser quarterly for course selection and completion of degree requirements and plan their schedule several quarters in advance (Note: all decisions on selection of courses are ultimately the responsibility of the student),
  • Review the college catalog for required course prerequisites and include these in schedule planning, and
  • All students who intend to transfer should meet with an adviser of the college they plan to transfer to review exact and specific admission requirements.

Students will demonstrate General Education Learning Outcomes in each of the following areas:

Distribution Requirements Learning Outcomes


Students will demonstrate Distribution Learning Outcomes in each of the following areas:

Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Use scientific and mathematical methods, modes of inquiry, and terminology to demonstrate knowledge, comprehension, and application of science concepts and insights.
Social Sciences: Use Social Science theories and methods to reason, communicate, apply insights, solve problems, and to develop a critical understanding of the diversity and interdependence of peoples and cultures.

Program Requirements Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the Program Learning Requirements for this degree, students will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and treatment of chemical dependency, including knowledge of the motivation of change, physiology of addiction and professional issues.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively work with consumers using communication skills, group interaction, problem solving, ethical procedures and crisis management techniques.
  • Describe a range of evidence-based practice methods, including principles, strategies and techniques used to assist consumers in reaching their service goals.
  • Demonstrate ability in case management tasks such as assessment, treatment planning, documentation, and referral procedures.
  • Career Management: Demonstrate the ability to research employment opportunities, prepare an effective employment package, and present oneself positively in a job interview.

Course Note


Not all courses are offered every quarter. Some elective courses are offered only once a year. Students are strongly urged to consult with their faculty adviser regarding their career objectives, interests, and schedule planning.
